Save money and bond with your pup by learning essential grooming skills you can do at home between professional appointments.
Regular grooming keeps your dog healthy, comfortable, and looking great. While professional grooming is valuable, there's a lot you can do at home.
Brushing
Regular brushing removes loose fur, prevents mats, distributes natural oils, and lets you check for skin issues. Frequency depends on coat type - daily for long coats, weekly for short coats.
Bathing
Most dogs need bathing every 4-6 weeks, or when dirty. Use lukewarm water and dog-specific shampoo. Rinse thoroughly - leftover soap causes irritation. Avoid getting water in ears.
Nail Trimming
Overgrown nails cause discomfort and mobility issues. Trim every 2-4 weeks. Cut below the quick (pink area in light nails). For dark nails, trim small amounts at a time. Keep styptic powder handy.
Ear Cleaning
Check ears weekly for redness, odor, or discharge. Clean with a vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton balls. Never insert anything into the ear canal.
Dental Care
Brush your dog's teeth several times weekly with dog toothpaste (never human toothpaste). This prevents periodontal disease, which affects 80% of dogs by age three.
Eye Care
Gently wipe away discharge with a damp cloth. See your vet if you notice excessive tearing, redness, or cloudiness.
Make grooming a positive experience with treats and praise. Start young to help your dog accept handling throughout their life.
